Founded in 1983, ECS is a local designer, manufacturer and supplier company of low to middle voltage switchboards, power distribution and control systems for manufacturing factories and utility companies (electricity and water) in Uganda.

BIO’s 2015 loan supported ECS to diversify its offer by entering the market of middle voltage distribution transformers used in electrical power systems; upstream other product lines; and build a new production facility.

ECS is a family-owned SME run by a mostly technical team, and the 2022 TA was implemented based on ECS' expressed need to strengthen its internal team's skills in sales and marketing and receive sector-expert coaching on its sales and growth strategy. The outputs from the TA were trainings to staff, internal strategy review (including securing a series of new costumers and the set-up of an internal marketing committee) and a 3-year business plan.

Technical assistance

This technical assistance aims to support the costs incurred by ECS to perform a series of technical tests required to obtain a production certification. The certification is needed for the production and sale of energy transformers up to 2500 kVA (kilo Volt Amperes), as opposed to the company’s current limit of 1000 kVA.

Expected impact

The certification will allow ECS to manufacture transformers up to 2500 kVA. This will enable ECS to access new business opportunities, specifically via tenders of its present customers, and to enter new markets.
