Activity
Agricultural commodity trading and cashew nut processing
This investment will finance TAN Ivoire’s first cashew processing plant, located in the cashew agro-industrial zone of Korhogo in northern Côte d’Ivoire, with a capacity of 30,000 tonnes of raw cashew nuts per year. The plant marks a key step in the company’s shift from commodity trading to local processing. By expanding local processing capacity, the project will contribute to greater value creation within Côte d’Ivoire through job generation, increased export revenues, and industrial development, in line with the national objective of processing 50% of the country’s raw cashew production locally by 2030. The investment will also strengthen the cashew value chain by increasing market opportunities and incomes for smallholder farmers. In addition, the project is backed by a strong and reputable sponsor with extensive industry expertise and a proven track record in developing and scaling successful industrial operations, providing a solid foundation for the project.
This loan benefits from an EU guarantee. The guarantee is provided under EDFI Transforming Global Value Chains (TGVC), a joint guarantee programme designed by the European Development Finance Institutions and EDFI Management Company. TGVC is implemented under the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+), the financing arm of the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy.
Development impacts
-
Local economic growth
This investment will strengthen Côte d’Ivoire’s cashew value chain through a new processing facility in the dedicated cashew agro-industrial zone of Korhogo. With an installed capacity of 30,000c tonnes of raw cashew nuts per year, representing approximately 10% of the cashew volumes processed in the country, the project will support Côte d’Ivoire’s second-largest agricultural export sector after cocoa, which provides a primary source of income for around 400,000 cashew producers and their families. By increasing domestic processing and moving up the value chain, the project will contribute to a shift from raw cashew nut exports toward higher-value processed products, raising TAN processing’s share of processed cashew revenues from 2% to 10%. This transformation is expected to nearly triple export revenues, from EUR 107 million in 2024 to EUR 333 million by 2030. The investment will also create quality employment opportunities, increasing the company’s workforce from 81 to 121 full-time equivalent positions by 2027, while indirectly supporting around 200 seasonal workers, mostly women engaged in labor-intensive peeling operations through subcontractors.
-
Private sector consolidation/innovation
The investment will support the development of modern local processing capacity, transforming the company from a pure trading operator into a more integrated processor. By increasing value addition within the country, the project will reduce exposure to seasonal market fluctuations and strengthen the resilience of the business model. At the same time, it aligns with Côte d’Ivoire’s industrialization objectives by contributing to the government’s ambition to increase the share of locally processed cashew nuts from 35% to 50% by 2030, creating greater economic value and employment opportunities within the domestic cashew sector.
-
Food security & rural development
The investment will significantly expand the company’s engagement with smallholder farmers, increasing raw cashew nut sourcing from 29,000 tonnes in 2024 to 75,000 tonnes by 2029. Through partnerships with cooperatives, the company is expected to reach 2,400 smallholder farmers by 2027, the majority through formal supply agreements that foster long-term commercial relationships and income stability. Farmers will benefit from quality-based premium pricing, timely payments, and, where needed, pre-financing support for cooperatives. In addition, the company will provide agricultural training and promote crop diversification, helping farmers improve productivity, product quality, and resilience to income fluctuations. Beyond its impact on farming households, the project will generate valuable off-farm employment opportunities in the rural region of Korhogo, creating direct jobs in processing operations and indirectly supporting hundreds of workers in cleaning, peeling, and packaging activities, with women representing a significant share of the workforce in labor-intensive processing roles.
E&S classification of the project: B+
