Activity
Dairy
The company collects milk from semi-nomadic livestock herders living along the Senegal river. The company supports these herders with food and other services for their livestock. The milk is processed into various dairy products at LdB’s factory in Richard Toll (North of Senegal) and then sold on the local market, mostly in Dakar.
This follow-on investment will be used to finance the first phase of LdB's investment plan for 2019-2023, which will increase the annual production capacity from 6,000t to 10,600t. This will result in having two process lines, one for yoghurt and one for fresh milk.
Development impacts
-
Local economic growth
Employment effect: LdB employed 295 people as of Dec 2018 and is the second biggest private employer in Richard Toll (150p). LdB is planning to hire another 150 people (RT and Dakar combined) by 2022. LdB also ensures a steady revenue to around 800 cattle breeders around the rural city.
-
Private sector consolidation/innovation
Creating and improving economic opportunities for local farmers: LdB has created the missing link between local cattle breeders and the formal market (the milk would otherwise be disposed of). LdB is reinforcing this economic opportunity by launching the first fresh milk processing line of the country.
-
Food security & rural development
Availability of food on the local market: LdB distributes its products for an affordable price through a network of around 12,000 shops in Senegal. Dairy products are considered a necessity product by the Senegalese Government. With its expansion plan, LdB will more than double its volumes.
