Activity
Njeru Industries Limited is a Kenyan company specializing in the processing and export of tea. Njeru receives an estimated 75,000 kgs of green leaf daily from 8,000 active smallholder farmers with a small portion (~9%) from Njeru Tea Estates (sister company owned 100% by Njeru Industries main shareholder).
The factory operates 2 automated black CTC tea (for crush, tear, curl – processing method) processing lines with a combined input capacity of 85,000 kgs of green leaf per day, one processing line for orthodox tea (input capacity of 10,000 kgs per day), one for purple tea (5,000 kgs per day) and one packing unit with a daily capacity of 2 tons.
Njeru sells 70% of its teas at the Mombasa Tea Auction. Direct trade orders with international buyers account for 20% and the remaining 10% (~400 tonnes) are sold domestically to local consumers.
Technical assistance
The technical assistance aims to formalise and improve Njeru's HR policies, procedures and practices, and ensure the compliance and alignment of the operations with the legal and international frameworks.
Expected impact
- Compliance with the local legislation and IFC PS 2
- A clear and comprehensive set of HR measures and tools consolidated in a whole HR management system
- A safe, fair and controlled environment for the workers
