HELIOS CLEAR fund Scsp

Helios Climate, Energy, Adaptation & Resilience (“CLEAR” or the “Fund”) is a thematic private equity growth fund with the objective to deliver high climate impact in Africa (both mitigation and adaptation). Bridging the gap between infrastructure finance and conventional private equity, the Fund will invest equity in climate-focused growth businesses, seeking to scale and accelerate green growth in Africa, protect livelihoods from the effects of climate change and support Africa’s contribution to global net zero goals. The Fund will aim to invest in businesses whose products and services in Africa seek to (i) avoid and reduce carbon emissions and (ii) enable sectors and populations to become more resilient and adapt to climate change. It will deploy capital across five focus areas: (i) Climate-smart food & agriculture (ii) Green transport (iii) Green energy solutions (iv) Resource efficiency and (v) Climate enablers.

Development impacts

  • Private sector consolidation/innovation

Knowledgeable Helios Partners investment team & back-office with several agnostic funds in Africa as a track record. CLEAR will be their first thematic fund, with a dedicated climate framework and dedicated team members.

Operational excellence is a main focus area for CLEAR - focusing on continual process improvement through the implementation of Lean Six Sigma and the improvement in the use of technology and general digitalization.

Institutionalization of portfolio companies (corporate governance), together with partnering with entrepreneurs to create businesses of scale and define new markets and competitors (strategy and execution) are two main pillars to improve the performance of the investees.

  • Fight against climate change

Subtantial contribution to climate change mitigation and adaptation - CLEAR is committed to invest at least 70% of the fund in projects qualifying as climate finance. Their robust approach is focussing on building businesses that contribute in a systemic way to the low-carbon transition (climate change mitigation). Where possible, the fund will also invest in businesses offering solutions at scale that increase sectors or population resilience to climate change (climate change adaptation).

  • Promotion of ESG best practices

Improving ESG practices of investees by systematically setting an ESG corrective plan. Efforts towards full implementation are guaranteed by contractual undertaking and annual independent review of these undertakings is performed.

Systematic approach to identify and assess climate risks - The fund has developped a Climate Change Risk Screening Tool to identify and assess main climate change related risks associated with prospective investments in a systematic way (covering both physical and transition risks). The tool outcomes are used to decide if additional risks assessment is required as part of the ESDD. Such assessment will be performed by external consultant and become a part of the investment rationale.
