The plant is composed of 2 gas turbines which started operations in 1999 (“Phase 1”) and 2000 (“Phase 2”) and a steam turbine that started operations in 2015 (“Phase 3”). Azito is one of the first and the largest Independent Power Producers in Ivory Coast.

In 2012, BIO together with other DFIs, jointly financed Azito Phase 3 project, which added a steam turbine and converted the existing plant from simple-cycle gas fired, to more efficient, combined-cycle technology.

In response to a growing electricity demand and an excellent performance of the plant, further expansion of the installed capacities were considered. Azito Phase 4 is a 253MW combined-cycle expansion project, which will bring total installed capacities of Azito plant, up to 710MW. The expansion will benefit from a less energy-intensive technology, 50% more efficient compared to an open cycle power plant with the same capacity, which will make it the most efficient in the country.

Azito Energie

Development impacts

  • Private sector consolidation/innovation

Through its energy efficient combined-cycle technology, Azito contributes to optimizing energy system of Ivory Coast, by limited gas usage, high thermal efficiency and lower tariffs, the project shall help reducing overall system's costs, ultimately benefiting end-users.

  • Access to basic services & goods

Once Azito 4 is fully operational, it will supply almost 2.000 GWh p.a. and on a combined basis (entire Azito 700MW plant) will generate over 4.500 GWh p.a., accounting for approximately 30% of total national generation and therefore making the plant of strategic importance in Ivory Coast.
