When the next generation of finance steps up: a student mission at the heart of BIO's Impact Strategy
BIO is currently preparing the launch of its second impact fund. To tackle this complex challenge and attract private investors, the institution has entrusted a strategic mission to a group of three final-year students from Vlerick Business School. It is a unique collaboration where academic excellence serves sustainable development. Interview with Cybill Oyakhire, Joao de Amorim and Sajad Alam.

The project: capitalizing on past lessons to build the future
In 2019, BIO launched its first SDG Frontier Fund, an investment fund designed to meet the Sustainable Development Goals in emerging economies. While this initial initiative provided valuable lessons, it also highlighted a major challenge: the difficulty of capturing and maintaining active participation from private investors.
Today, on the verge of launching a second similar fund, the Belgian institution aims to course-correct. The objective is clear: structure this new financial tool so that it is fully attractive to the private sector. This is where the trio of students from Vlerick Business School comes in. Their final master's project, spanning several months, acts as a vital bridge between BIO's development ambitions and the unforgiving realities of financial markets.
The mission: sounding out the market and decoding private expectations
The mission entrusted to these young talents is akin to high-level strategic consulting. In concrete terms, their role consists of conducting an in-depth pre-market assessment. This involves meeting with institutional and private investors such as banks, insurance companies, wealth managers, or family offices to deeply understand their needs.
What are their return expectations? What is their risk appetite when it comes to investing in frontier markets like Latin America, Asia, or Africa? How do they perceive the value of social and environmental impact? By answering these questions, the students are tasked with designing a compelling pitch deck. This key document will not be a mere theoretical presentation but a genuine catalyst designed to help BIO's teams convince their future financial partners.
The impact: an outside perspective on a changing market
The integration of this student team within BIO brings immense added value to the institution. As a state-backed entity, BIO has not always had the vital need to "sell" its projects to private sponsors with the same aggressiveness as a traditional investment bank. The students thus bring a fresh agility and an essential outside perspective.
Furthermore, the sustainable finance landscape has evolved significantly since 2019. Regulations have tightened, and investors are showing growing skepticism toward sustainability promises, fearing greenwashing. Thanks to their fresh outlook and access to their school's vast professional network, the students can pick up on these weak signals and adapt BIO's messaging accordingly. They also help demystify a financial model that is relatively rare in Europe: the "fund of funds" applied to frontier markets.
The value: a stepping stone toward meaningful finance
For these three young professionals, who come from diverse backgrounds such as corporate banking and financial consulting, this project represents much more than a simple graduation requirement. It is an opportunity to leave behind redundant academic exercises—like endlessly churning out theoretical financial models—and dive into the real economy.
Within a flexible and empowering corporate culture, they are discovering a new facet of their profession. Far from the purely transactional aspect of traditional finance, this mission allows them to combine analytical rigor with societal impact. It is a smooth and highly professionalizing transition, proving that the new generation is ready to use the tools of high finance to tackle tomorrow's global challenges.
