AMAYO II is the extension of the existing wind energy project AMAYO I in south-western Nicaragua. The wind farm is located close to the Pan-American Highway on the western shore of Lake Nicaragua, about 18km southeast of the city of Rivas. The 11 turbines provide a capacity of 23MW and are located adjacent to the 39 MW AMAYO I wind project. The two ventures AMAYO I and AMAYO II are legally separated projects but the structure of ownership, construction, management and off-take contracts is analogous.
This investment was made in the framework of a Risk Sharing Agreement between BIO & FMO.
Development impacts
-
Access to basic services & goods
The AMAYO II energy generation is based on wind energy for which the region offers favourable conditions of availability and solidity of wind speed. Access to the national grid is secured by the existing transmission line.
-
Fight against climate change
Energy produced from fossil sources to be replaced by CO2 free energy through the installation of the wind farm, reducing GHG-emissions by 185,544 tons of CO2 per year.
