In June 1995, the Belgian doctor Bernard Blanpain created "Medicare" in order to make up for the lack of quality care in Lubumbashi. In September 1997, the Centre took its current name of Centre Médical de la Communauté. In 1998 the Centre started collaborating with the Forrest Group, which acquired it three years later.

CMC is recognized as the reference clinic in terms of quality in Lubumbashi. The Centre's objective is not to generate a return for shareholders but to be financially self-sufficient.

CMC currently employs about ten doctors in the main specialties. The offer is mainly aimed at the salaried staff of companies in the region. There is no competing offer at equivalent price and quality.

The current patient population (employer agreements and private services) comprises 7,550 families, including 28,600 children.

The CMC has developed a hybrid offer:

  • Paid services, open to all.
  • A system of flat rates (employer agreements) allowing employees to benefit from quality health coverage. These packages are fully paid for by employers (legal obligation).

This investment project consists mainly of building a maternity ward and additional hospital rooms. The project is expected to increase access to health care on two levels :

  • Extension of the medical offer: improvement of the offer for the existing patient (hospitalization rooms, maternity, neonatalogy, improvement of analysis capacities in labs and radiology). For these services, patients will no longer have to travel to other health centres.
  • Increase in the number of patients treated under employer-sponsored agreements or privately.

Development impacts

  • Promotion of ESG best practices

In the contract, BIO will require the company to put in place procedures relating to safety and well-being at work as well as procedures relating to waste management.
