The Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (“BIO”) is a development finance institution controlled by the Belgian government that seeks to support the private sector in developing countries by investing in local enterprises, either directly or indirectly (e.g. through financial institutions or investment funds).

Your role

As an Investment Officer - Equity Portfolio you will monitor part of the direct equity investments and private equity fund investments. You will also support the Investment Officers in the origination of new equity investments and participate in other corporate initiatives as needed.

The Private Equity team currently consists of 8 investment professionals. The direct equity and private equity fund portfolios are spread across 3 continents: Africa, Asia and Latin America. They currently consist of ~15 direct investments and over 60 Private Equity funds, and represent together ~40% of BIO’s total investment portfolio.

You will directly report to the Private Equity Manager, who in turn reports to the Chief Investment Officer.

Your role

Monitor the Equity portfolio

Manage part of BIO’s equity portfolio with a focus on the financial interests of BIO and its developmental mission:

  • Ensure that the reporting obligations are met by the portfolio companies (spanning from financial information to E&S and development impact reports) and update BIO’s Management Information System (on quarterly basis);
  • Prepare disbursements to client companies and ensure that BIO’s clients are not in breach of contract from an administrative and financial point of view;
  • Participate (and represent BIO) in the Advisory Boards of PE fund investments;
  • Prepare the portfolio reviews and performance analyses (on semi-annual basis);
  • Prepare the valuation of the equity investments (on semi-annual basis).

Support the origination of new equity investments

You will form a deal team together with the Investment Officer to assess the merits and risk profile of investment projects, and bring an investment project from selection to closing:

  • Participate in discussions with prospective clients;
  • Prepare and participate in on-site Due Diligence;
  • Draft (parts of) the Screening and Investment Analysis notes.

You will actively participate in deal sourcing:

  • Participate in pipeline meetings;
  • Contribute to maintenance of the project pipeline records;
  • Contribute to the mapping of new target markets and identify new market opportunities (on ad-hoc basis).

Participate to ad-hoc projects and corporate initiatives

  • Participate to professional seminars, fairs, conferences in line with the content of BIO’s private equity unit mission;
  • Participate to ad-hoc internal projects and task forces;
  • Support new corporate initiatives as needed (e.g. SDG Frontier Fund).

 

Profile

  • Master in Business Administration /Finance or related fields. The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is an asset;
  • 3 to 5 years post-graduation relevant work experience, ideally as Corporate Banker / Auditor / Equity or Research Analyst or any other similar functions;
  • Working language: written and spoken English and French. Spanish is an asset;
  • Good knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel);
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, precise and detail-oriented;
  • Interested in emerging and frontier markets;
  • Ability to take initiative, learn quickly and strive for results;
  • Willingness to travel abroad, meet and discuss with clients;
  • Good communication skills, team player.
