Banco Regional SAECA

Banco Regional is a Paraguayan bank that focuses principally on agricultural and livestock sectors. It was founded in 1991 by farmers, as a regional bank centred around Encarnación and primarily active in the farming communities in the southwest of Paraguay.

Agriculture in Paraguay has boomed in the past 10 years, today its economy revolves around agriculture, driven to a large extent by the expansion of large-scale soybean cultivation and meat production. The Bank has been instrumental in facilitating this growth, having provided financing to crop and cattle farmers at a time when other banks considered the agricultural sector too risky.

BIO’s financing will support Banco Regional in further growing its portfolio of loans to SMEs active in the agribusiness sector, which in turn will support the creation of employment and livelihood opportunities for a large part of the population.

BIO´s role on this project goes beyond the facilitation of financial means. Together with FMO and IADB, BIO will support the development of E&S standards specialized on agriculture and cattle financing. The aim of this project is to establish the minimum E&S standards for financing to these sectors, as well as providing guidance towards reaching international best practices.
