BOA Tanzania

BOA Bank Tanzania is a universal bank offering the classical range of banking services including corporate and retail products. The Bank currently operates from 7 branches (5 in Dar Es Salaam, 1 in Arusha and 1 in Mwanza). The bank has a strong focus on SMEs and with the capital increases in which BIO participted, it aims to expand its network in order to reinforce its geographical presence and to increase its deposit market share.

The Bank’s professionalism and its presence in support of local SMEs has much improved since June 2007. Credit to SMEs, using BIO’s definition of exposure lower than USD 1m, now represents a quarter of the lending activity of the Bank in volume.

BIO’s role in these developments has been significant, first as an early investor in the turnaround process and second as an active participant in the governance of the Bank. The staff has furthermore encouraged BOA Tanzania to partner with BIO’s other SME finance clients in Tanzania, such as GroFin and Alios Finance, which has led to a fruitful collaboration for the benefit of local SMEs. Finally BIO supported the implementation of the MSME finance programme, through which training was provided in SME lending and general risk management methodologies.
